When it comes to oral surgery, when it becomes necessary, and to get them out of pain, the biggest thing is to understand that this is surgery, okay? But if we need to give them a sedative to get them through it, that’s easy. We can do it. Hence, going back to my residency program at the Denver Health Medical Center, I was trained, like, live on how to do this, very confident in the surgery that I can do, but I also know when to refer to specialists. I do a lot of surgery. And we make sure that the patient is comfortable, numb, whatever it takes before we start.

Keep Your Smile Bright With Dental Surgery
You may not like the idea of having surgery performed on your mouth. However, the time may come when you need dental surgery to stop your pain, preserve your oral health, or prepare your mouth for further dental treatments. You’re in good hands with the Keene Dental team. Dr. Keene has completed many surgical procedures over his years in practice.
He and our team will listen carefully to your needs and concerns. We’ll answer any questions about your care, so you remain fully informed about your oral health and any recommended treatments.
We’ll also make sure you’re completely relaxed by offering you three levels of sedation: laughing gas, oral conscious sedation in pill form, and IV sedation administered by an anesthesiologist. One of these options will be right for your level of anxiety and the procedure you are having. We’ll let you know what to expect so you can plan accordingly. For example, you’ll need a ride home if you receive oral or IV sedation.
We perform these oral surgery procedures:
- Tooth Extraction – We’ll gently remove damaged or diseased teeth to help you feel better and improve your oral health.
- Wisdom Teeth Removal – If these third molars are causing problems, your dentist can remove them so they don’t damage your other teeth and gums.
- Gum Grafts – Dr. Keene can take tissue from another area of your mouth and place it where your gums have receded.
- Cosmetic Gum Surgery – You can receive the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique for receded gums or crown lengthening to make short teeth appear longer.
- Bone Grafts – To prepare your mouth for dental implants, we’ll add material to your jaw to help it grow new bone.
- Ridge Augmentation – Your dentist will build up your jaw ridge where you’ve lost teeth to get it ready for implants or to make it more esthetically appealing.
- Dental Implant Placement – Dr. Keene will place your implants here, using a computer-guided procedure.

Tooth extraction is often needed if a tooth is too damaged to repair or if it is damaging your other teeth. In some cases, you need to have teeth removed to make room for dentures or another dental restoration. If necessary, we’ll recommend a bone graft to ensure your jaw is strong enough to support dental implants.
For the first 24 hours after oral surgery, you shouldn’t attempt any sort of exercise. Doing too much too soon can cause problems. For example, strenuous exercise could loosen the blood clot on a tooth extraction site and cause a painful dry socket. After the first day, limit your exercise to low-impact activities for a few more days to be on the safe side.
Many people do feel soreness after oral surgery, but that fades as you recover. If anything, oral surgery is done to alleviate pain and long-term oral health problems. Our dental professionals will be happy to advise you on the best way to recover from your surgery, so you can get back to feeling like yourself as soon as possible.
